Mr. Luke Edward Flett of Red Deer, Alberta, was called home after a sudden and unexpected brain aneurysm on Friday, June 28, 2024 at the young age of 45 years. Luke was born February 27, 1979, in Regina, Saskatchewan to his loving mother, Colleen Jean Flett and his doting father, Edward Stephen Flett. Luke was surrounded by love in his early life, with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all present in his life. Luke had no problem making friends with his easy smile, sharp wit, and sense of justice. Luke was always a protector, even in his early days on the Elementary School playground. Luke moved to Red Deer, Alberta with his family in 1992, and blossomed into a fine young man with many close friends. Luke was blessed with speed, tenacity, and athletic ability, which he applied to all sports but especially lacrosse and football. Luke played many years of youth and adult lacrosse, winning several individual and team awards. Notably, he won a 1998 Founders Cup Jr. B National Lacrosse Championship, a 1999 U19 First Nations Cup Field Lacrosse Championship, and several Alberta Provincial Championships at the youth and adult level. Luke also helped coach a Red Deer U16 Field Lacrosse Team to a National Championship – receiving a Mayor’s Recognition award for his efforts. Luke was a perennial High School Football Defensive All-Star and helped Camille J. Lerouge and Notre Dame High Schools win multiple Red Deer and Central Alberta Zone Championships. Upon graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1997, Luke pursued a career in several skilled trades but finally chose carpentry, where he received his Red Seal Designation. Luke worked as a skilled contractor for many years before joining the Red Deer Housing Authority in May 2020, where he worked his way up to a supervisory position in short time, managing his own team and overseeing the maintenance and renovations of over 300 low-income housing properties. Team sports gave way to Luke’s other cherished pastimes – fishing and golfing. Luke was a skilled fisherman and was adept with both the casting and fly rod. Luke could often be found in the Alberta rivers and streams in the summer months, and on its frozen lakes in the winter months, often with great success. Of all Luke’s accomplishments, he was most proud of being a committed, loving father and husband. Luke welcomed into the world his son, Kayden Geordin Flett on October 24, 2002, and his daughter, Bella Brennan Marion Flett on October 21, 2010. Luke was a devoted father and a horrible tease, and thankfully for us, his personality lives on in his two children. Luke got to spend eleven wonderful years with the love of his life, Candace Flett (nee Gillespie). Luke and Candace met in May 2013 and were wed on August 28, 2021, in Red Deer, Alberta. They shared many laughs and shared interests of golf, fishing, and travel. Luke and Candace had big plans and goals to achieve before his tragic passing. They were true partners in life. Luke will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered, and forever cherished in the hearts of his family and many friends. Luke leaves to mourn his loving wife, Candace, his son, Kayden, and his daughter, Bella. He will also be sadly missed by his brother, Geordin (Jamie), his nephews, Garrett and Tyler and his niece, Rachel, all of Red Deer, his father-in-law, Pat King and his mother-in-law, Tammy Gillespie of Red Deer County, his brother-in-law, Chris Gillespie (Megan) of Red Deer County, his nephews, Jaden, Jace, and Jaeger of Red Deer County, his aunt, Heather Flett (Ed) of Red Deer, his aunts, Jean, Rena, and Darien Flett, all of Regina, Saskatchewan, his uncles, Bob Brennan and Bill Brennan of Regina, Saskatchewan, his aunt, Maureen Greene of Surrey, British Columbia, his aunt, Sheila Beckie of Denver, Colorado, and his aunt, Julie Hughes of Regina, Saskatchewan, as well as numerous cousins and dear friends. Luke was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Colleen. A Celebration of Luke’s Life was held at Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, July 5, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Followed by a reception held at the Red Deer Curling Club, Pidherney Centre E, 4725 – 43rd Street, Red Deer, Alberta from 3:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Luke’s honour may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance at www.stars.ca or to the Red Deer Fish and Game Association, PO Box 2, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 5E7.
